To see or not to see is the question.  After a 12 year hiatus James Cameron’s newest release Avatar hit the theaters Friday to solid reviews.  Yahoo Movies Critics are giving it an A- and the user reviews are giving it an A- too.  Although many recent user reviews are not so friendly, giving it a D or F.  One reviewer called it “Avaturd” and is quoted saying, “This movie was so disappointing. Over hyped James Cameron couldn’t have been lazier or more cliched. Tell me about the rabbits, James…. Piece of Avaturd.” I am not sure about the rabbits but maybe thats because I have not seen the movie yet.  Many other user reviews are criticizing the plot calling it “cowboys and indians”, and do not like the theme of the movie feeling it has a political undertone such as portraying humans as the evil white man stealing land from the indigenous people of Pandora.  From the previews I could already tell that was the case so I am not sure why so many viewers were surprised.  Anyway this is a big Hollywood movie, what should you expect?  One thing the haters could agree with is the special effects.  So far everyone likes the spectacular new 3D technology that provides the viewer to feel fully immersed in the world of Pandora.  James Cameron spent much time co-developing a new generation of stereoscopic cameras.  This allows the user to watch the movie with a pair of polarized 3D glasses.  Unlike the old-school 3D glasses you could find in Captain Crunch cereal with the red and blue lenses these new lenses are polarized differently for each eye.  This removes a different part of the image as it enters each eye which makes the image appear in 3D.  James Cameron also created a virtual camera to enter the world as if he was playing a first person shooter such as Halo 3.  This allowed him the flexibility to enter the 3D world of Pandora and create a fully cinematic experience.  So far as of this writing the movie has already grossed over $73M.  Not bad I think I will check it out on Christmas Day unless I get pulled into Sherlock Holmes instead.  If you have already seen Avatar, let us know what you thought!  And if for some unknown reason you have not seen the trailer, here it is!
